Bilbao, Spain

A little rain along the wide river walk on Sunday morning made it feel like we had the town all to ourselves.

After a day of travel, Jacksonville to Atlanta to CDG Paris, we arrived in Bilbao at 9:30 am and wandered happily but aimlessly, enjoying various pastries and an odd bacon taco with multiple coffees, until our room was ready at 2pm. After showers and power naps, we shared some Rioja with friends at the terrace bar and made dinner reservations for 9:30. I like it here.

Travel bar, raised.

Before this trip, we became Platinum AmErican Express card holders, which includes access to the Delta Sky Club.

How have we not done this sooner?

We started at a lounge in Jacksonville. I walked past a buffet of omelettes and fruit to pick up a Starbucks Americano and a paper. I wasn’t quite ready for the wine or mimosas I saw at 8am, but no judgement here.

Next stop, the domestic terminal lounge in Atlanta where we enjoyed Thai Chicken soup and a hummus/salad plate around noon before traipsing over to the international terminal.

We met up with our travel companions, a physician and his wife headed to the same conference in Spain, at the Delta Sky Club lounge in the international terminal where we enjoyed some shredded chicken and a glass of white wine before boarding our 3pm flight to Paris.

You know the first time you experience a really nice hotel – how it raises the bar on your travel standards, making it hard to go back to budget hotels with scratchy sheets? That’s basically what’s happened here – I’ve found another way to be spoiled. In our first day of travel as Delta members, we spent 4 hours in 3 different Delta Sky Clubs and now I don’t want to travel any other way.

Living on vacation

It seems there should be common name for the people who live full time where other people go on vacation. I mean, other than “lucky,” or “locals.”

We call it “living on vacation” at our house in Ponte Vedra Beach in northeast Florida, just south of Jacksonville. Home of fancy resorts, golf courses, The Players Championship, and the PGA headquarters, Ponte Vedra Beach is full of manicured lawns, sandy toes, and enough beach vibe to balance out an otherwise conservative county club feel.

Surfin’

Let’s go surfin’ now.

These guys are learning how.

We’ve put the kids in a couple of different surf programs. The first, Saltwater Cowgirls.

More recently, they’ve spent a week at East Coast Boarding School, a 9-noon surf camp.

Butterfly Pavillion

This bug looks exceptionally productive. He is going to meet his sales quota for sure.

Located in Westminster, Colorado, the Butterfly Pavillion is the first stand-alone non-profit invertebrate zoo in the nation.
